Preparing for Surgery

A practical guide to help you get ready for your hip or knee replacement, and what to expect along the way.

Preparing well for surgery helps ensure that your procedure goes smoothly and that your recovery starts on the right foot. In the weeks leading up to your surgery, you will complete a series of preoperative steps — medical clearances, lab work, and specific preparation instructions — to make sure you are ready.

We have put together an interactive preoperative checklist to help you track these steps. Each item includes a short explanation, and you can check items off as you complete them.

Every patient's preparation is a little different. Your care team will give you specific instructions for your procedure — if anything here differs from what you were told directly, follow the instructions given by your care team, and contact our office with any questions.
